Monteno

Italiano

The part of the mountain above Pasturo with meadows and woods at about 800 meters above sea level has the name Monteno, you cross it by climbing the Sentiero Pasturo - Pialeral after about 20 minutes walk from the village or along the agro-silvo-pastoral road Pasturo - Alpe Cova in the vicinity of a sharp hairpin to the left. Since my most recent excursions on the Grignone involve walking between Pasturo and Cornisella, I do not fail to cross Montèn, the dialect name of this locality.[^]

To the right of the mule track for those coming from Pasturo, inside a meadow and accessible by a path, stands a typical building that dates back to the time when the houses were a refuge in summer for local farmers and shepherds.[^] Next to the hut, there is a frescoed chapel, the Madonna is standing and a peasant woman on her knees prays. An epigraph says Invernizzi Antonio rebuilt in 1939. Along the mule track, on the left, a wooden gate and a yellow old hut. Here, from the main road, a dirt road just a few meters long branches off, where there are a handful of huts probably built in the 70s, the period of expansion of tourism in Valsassina, one more exposed has a beautiful view facing Barzio.
Back on the trail, not before having admired a luxuriant specimen of weeping willow and fruit trees, on the corner of the intersection, there is a house that is exhibited on an events bulletin board. This is the headquarters of Shangri Là Onlus,[^] in Località Monteno, a non-profit association of Cristina Rovelli, a woman of Milanese origins, graduated in natural sciences, who moved to Valsassina in the 90s out of passion and love of nature. Cristina organizes guided walks for adults and children to discover nature, educational workshops, promotes the care and defense of animals.

Here the mountain becomes steep, the mule track is cemented to allow the transit of cars that descend from the carriage road that continues to Alpe Cova. Reached the road after one hundred meters, there is a hairpin bend with a worn road sign of the Comunità Montana n. 16, prohibition of transit for unauthorized vehicles, and one of prohibition of parking. Immediately, at a crossroads for hikers, who turn right towards Cornisella along a stretch that is still very steep in concrete, there is a table of locations Pedalling in the Park by Regional Park of the Northern Grigna, Monteno 850 meters, and other signs.

Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary (Pasturo)

Italiano

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary (in Italian Cappella della Madonna del Rosario) at Pasturo in Valsassina, is a votive shrine,[^] a few hundred meters from the town center, 739 meters high, on the slopes of the Grignone, at the beginning of one of the main mountain paths. In the Kompass paper map,[^] this small-sized Christian religious architectural structure is indicated as the Cappella del Rosario (Chapel of the Rosary), in the Global Map[^] as Cappella della Madonna (Chapel of Our Lady), in Edizioni Multigraphic[^] it does not exist; in Google Maps it is not marked, in OpenStreetMap it is Cappella della Madonna del Rosario.[^] On the internet there are only my photos.[^]

How to reach it

The Chapel is reached from Pasturo in about 10 minutes of climbing along a mule track, the beginning of Sentiero Pasturo - Pialeral, in the first section from Pasturo to Cornisella. It is clear that one of the functions of the wayside shrine is to entrust the Madonna with the protection of hikers, who pass through here at the beginning of a day in Grigna, on their way to Cornisella, Alpe Cova, Pialeral or up to the Brioschi Refuge, and on the way back. The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7.[^]

The silhouette of the chapel appears at a steep bend to the left, where the mule track joins a path coming from Baiedo, an hamlet a quarter of an hour away. Next to the votive capital there are two mountain huts, a few meters further a drinking pipe with a stone basin and the Cariola stream; the houses of Monteno are about 10 minutes away along the mule track.

Description

The Chapel of the Madonna del Rosario is about 3 meters high and 5 meters wide with an arched vault, closed by a gate, a grate with a small cross.[^] At the base a black box where you can leave the offerings and under a stone where you can sit,[^] a lamp with a light bulb hangs from the ceiling.
The aedicola is built upstream of those who walk, in a semi-flat position. A tiled roof, probably a later addition, crosses the mule track of the path supported by two masonry columns, providing a possible shelter for the traveler; the base is painted yellow, the rest white.[^]

Inside the chapel, there is a standing statue of the Madonna, fifty centimeters high, with a red dress and a blue mantle rolled up from the waist down, of discreet workmanship. In her right hand Virgin holds the rosary, hanging down, her left arm raised to half holds the Child. Baby Jesus holds a rosary in his right hand, with the other holding a black sphere (a globe) with a cross on top, a symbol of Christ's supremacy over the world and earthly powers. Below, on the wall, a written, of which now one reads only Nobis, lower a bench that acts as a small altar.[^] The side walls and the ceiling are almost completely discolored.
Two frescoes, of a quality not to be despised, are on the sides of the statue of the Madonna and Child. To the left of the viewer, a saint is painted with a book in his right hand and a white flower with a long green stem under his arm; to the right, a saint or nun is in the act of prayer with a merciful gaze upwards.

Agriturismo Brunino

Italiano

Agriturismo Brunino is a farm at 1015 meters high at Brunino, on Grignone in Valsassina, in the municipality of Pasturo.
The farm is at the center of the resort, a very quiet place and surrounded by nature, in a sunny position, very good for enjoying the cuisine and spending a nice day just a few kilometers from Lecco and flatland. Accessible on foot easily and quickly, from farm one enjoys the view of Grignetta, with Valle del Gerone,[^] and Grignone, on the other side, of the mountains of Valsassina, with in foreground Valle di Desio and Zucco di Desio.

Agriturismo Brunino has address Località Brunino 1, mobile phone 380 2957590, and it is open in July and August every day, in other months closing days are Monday and Tuesday,[^] but it is better to phone call during the weekdays.[^][^]

On the net

Agriturismo Brunino[^] has a very simple website,[^] on Facebook there is an unofficial page named Agriturismo Brunino (1015mt) Pasturo(LC)[^] and a public group[^].[^] In Instagram there is a position with the same name as the unofficial Facebook page,[^] it has been tagged a few times,[^] and in Flickr, with the name of the farm in the search text box, come out only my photos.[^]

How to reach it

Agriturismo Brunino can be reached in short from several locations: from Pasturo through a paved and cemented road accessible only by authorized vehicles, it takes 1 hour to walk, and from Balisio, taking Via Grassi Lunghi and going to the Church of the Sacred Heart, continuing on a private road, less than half an hour by walk. The two roads join just in front of the farmhouse, separated by a yellow bar.
Many paths pass through the agritourism, one cycling with Pedaling in the Park 3 signage, from Cornisella and from Church of the Sacred Heart.

Structure

Agriturismo Brunino, lovely to look at, is a traditional mountain shelter, in the past called Rifugio Brunino. It is a one storey building plus a mansard with sloping roof, elevated from the road.[^][^] In the facade, four windows are on the ground floor, in the middle of the entrance, upstairs a long balcony with two doors and a window, beside a small mold with a bas-relief of Madonna and Child and two angels[^].[^] At left, a veranda, a part of the building that looks like a later addition, beside there is another building, which is a stable with hay, behind a space for donkeys, a large chicken coop and a vegetable garden[^].

Inside there is a large dining room furnished in wood, which gives the impression of a family atmosphere, with a large fireplace in the center. A staircase goes to the top floor rooms.[^] The lovely veranda area is equipped with some tables where eating, a door goes to the kitchen. It is also a place to shelter from the sun or the cold, and is named by a plate Bivouac of "Gurdet", dedicated to a mountaineer of Mandello Andrea Gatti.[^]

Outside there are benches to sit,[^] and a lawn, equipped with deckchairs, umbrellas and tables,[^] at a corner, on a high green pole, waves the Italian flag.[^]

In front there is Cascina Margherita,[^] a rentable space for groups, where it sees a lot of guys in the summer, from schools and oratories of Lecco, that take advantage of the farm.

Cousine

Agriturismo Brunino is frequented by hikers and bikers that, along a short distance, can be stay in pristine surrounds, outdoors. Here, hungry, they can taste the typical mountain and traditional cuisine of Valsassina, sometimes also during the weekday, or simply relax taking an ice cream, a drink or a coffee, and repair when necessary.
Main courses more frequently are pizzoccheri,[^] ravioli, gnocchi,[^] pasta, second dishes meat or birds served with polenta,[^] then mixed vegetables and more, to finish cakes pies, fruit salad and ice cream with coffee. In Trip Advisor the rating of the reviews is good.[^]

My experience is that Agriturismo Brunino is the only place that gives some confidence to eat on Grignone on the slope of Pasturo and I went there for several occasions.[^] In the week, when it's open, the menu is limited to a maximum of two choices, good food and service, right the portion of the dishes. The price is reasonable, if not low, for a first course, a glass of wine, a slice of pie and a coffee I spend just over 10 euros.
Managers of the farm refuge are two friendly young people.

Brunino

Italiano

Brunino, or full Località Brunino, and also Piani di Brunino for its flat conformation, is a place on Grignone just over a thousand meters high, in the municipality of Pasturo in Valsassina.

Brunino lies in the advanced position of Grigna Settentrionale, in a plane, and then in a slight descent, sunny, grass kept, where in summer it is bailed the hay. The space is a basin closed by the small hill that surrounding it, at south Costa Riale, 1083 meters high, westward another one, in a map named Zucco del Canto del Brug, 1097 meters high, in the middle the wonderful scenary of two Grigne. On the other side, partly hidden from a bump on which there is a farm, one can see the Orobie's highest mountains of Valsassina,[^] Culmine San Pietro and Zucco di Desio.
In Brunino there are, scattered, a dozen mountain huts, chalets, houses, farmsteads and Agriturismo Brunino, which is a mountain refuge.

Brunino can be reached by car from two roads, from Pasturo and Chiesetta del Sacro Cuore (Small Church of the Sacred Heart), which is approximately one kilometer from Colle di Balisio, both accessible only by authorized vehicles, a cycle route and numerous trails. Walking from Pasturo it takes about an hour and from Chiesetta del Sacro Cuore under half an hour. Brunino is about ten kilometers from Lecco, from Brianza is one hour far, including the walk, and in just over from Milan, closeness that makes the pleasant resort frequented.

On Internet

In the referenecs of this page there are some Brunino links on social networks,[^][^][^][^] my photo albums[^][^][^] or by other persons[^].

Place center and huts

Arriving in Brunino from the road that goes up from the Church of the Sacred Heart,[^] where you can park your car in a dirt road and follow Torrente Cornisella along the Cold Water Valley, in view of the resort center there is a didactic panel by Regional Park of the Northern Grigna and Valsassina, Valvarrone, Val d'Esino and Riviera Mountain Community, that informs about Site of Community Importance IT2030001 "Northern Grigna".[^] A few meters before the last bend of the road, a little hidden, a path, Sentiero Brunino - Cornisella, bypasses on the right the steep coast of Zucco, indicated by a yellow sign with two errors (or terms not common) in the first two names, Cornicella (instead of Cornisella) and Pialleral, and a third, S. Calimero.[^]

In front of looking left, sideways, Agriturismo Brunino, and right a farm, is the heart of the resort. The road is interrupted by a bar, where on a yellow sign is written Chi Apre Chiuda (Who Open Close) and below, more in small, Thank you.[^][^] A revolving passage, unusual thing in mountain, passes a person on the other side, where there is a sign, Municipality road, which suggests a different property of the two roads.[^] Here also a location table of Pedalling in the Park signage by Regional Park of the Northern Grigna and by Valsassina, Valvarrone, Val d'Esino and Riviera Mountain Community, that says Brunino 1,010 meters, and indicates a path to Cappella del Sacro Cuore as 3.[^]

Agriturismo Brunino, which is now in front of and slightly raised above the road, at 1015 meters high, is formed by a one-storey building with a sloping roof attic.[^] One can eat into a large room with fireplace or a veranda with Grignetta in front. In an outdoor area there is a small lawn, equipped with tables, deckchairs and umbrellas. There is always someone, hikers, cyclists or who can go by car.[^] On the coast of the meadow there is a hut that seems to look behind the agriturismo.[^]

Facing Agriturismo Brunino is Cascina Margherita,[^] the name is written on a wooden sign, which is a touristic building that hosts parties, groups and guys of the parishes. It has 6 bedrooms with 25 beds, common inside areas and outside for play and recreation,[^] a small church,[^][^] and is rentable even for only one weekend. Next is Baita Costantino,[^] same size of Cascina Margherita, a little further on a Chalet,[^] rentable. These three facilities are managed by Agenzia Viaggi Regina delle Grigne (Travel Agency Queen of Grigne) in Lecco.[^]
The dirt road that runs along these farms is closed by a bar, where there is an access prohibition sign with the word private road.[^] At the end of this, getting lost in the woods on the slopes of Costa Riale, an old farm with beautiful view on Grignetta,[^][^] in the plateau below the coast, a little down, two houses.

Going back to the location center, and continuing for the flat dirt road towards north, on the right coast a large farmhouse in a dominant position[^] and, sometimes, cows grazing in the planes.[^] On the short slope that rises on the left to the Zucco, there are five or six houses and cabins, modern and good appeareance, sometimes inhabited in summer.

Crossroads at the small chapel coming from Pasturo Road

Coming to Brunino from Pasturo through the agro-forestry-pastoral Road Pasturo - Alpe Cova, road for only authorized vehicles, from a branch that comes off shortly before Cornisella and climbing two hairpin turn in the woods, it arrives to a crossroad where is small a chapel.[^][^] The masonry chapel has statues depicting the Holy Family and an angel, under a plaque with a prayer to Mary, with the written Brunino, year 2000.[^] The votive shrine does not inspire me particular religious feelings. At the same time, the view is attracted, to the left, by the farmhouse overlooking Brunino and by a dirt road that goes straight and flat to the center of the resort, no more than a hundred meters away and hidden by a semi-curve.

With the face turned to the small chapel:

  • to the right, a path that goes in the direction of Cornisella, now marked by a red and black wooden arrow.[^] It is Sentiero Cornisella - Brunino that passes from Spinarolo, marked in opposite direction by Valsassina, Valvarrone, Val d'Esino and Riviera Mountain Community as Brunino - 3.
  • to the left, a dirt road goes slightly uphill, crossing the ditch that closes Brunino. It goes on flat and then downhill for about four hundred meters, where one meets two small huts, an old farm and down three houses, here the road ends. The view enjoys Altopiano Valsassina's countries and its mountains.[^]

On the side of the chapel, along the dirt road to the center of Brunino, there is a stone to sit down. Here is a trail table, Cappella del Sacro Cuore - 3 for the road, which is for cyclists coming from Cornisella, and a wooden sign, Agriturismo, in the same direction.[^]

Conclusion

Brunino, or as you like Piani di Brunino, a short distance from Lecco, Brianza and Milan, is an excellent destination to spend a few hours in the green, without cars and in the cool of the mountain. The resort is relaxing, isolated from the small hills surrounding and guarded by the Grigne.[^][^] It lives up in summer and during holiday periods, also thanks to boys and girls of Cascina Margherita and Cascina Constantino,[^][^][^][^] who can play and walk on the many trails of Northern Grigna.
Hikers, after a short walk, and cyclists find hospitality at Agriturismo Brunino, almost always open, a reference point for the place and the mountain, for Pasturo and its people,[^] where eating at reasonable prices.

I've discovered Brunino in the last few years, coming from higher up, generally from Alpe Cova passing through Cornisella, to find something to eat served. I was fine, now Brunino is my destination, also because it is at an altitude where in summer one escapes from the heat and the temperature is pleasant.

Church of the Alpini in Cornisella

Italiano

The small church of the Alpini in Cornisella is a votive chapel built at the behest of the local group of the Penne Nere (Black Feathers) of the ANA in memory of the Alpini and other soldiers of Pasturo who died or were lost in the Second World War. In two tombstones on the church wall are their names with a photo and the place of death. Cornisella is a small locality with a few huts on the Grignone, in Northern Grigna Regional Park, in an alpine setting at 1050 meters above sea level, easily reachable on foot with a mule track in about 45 minutes from the village and along an agro-forestry-pastoral road. The small shrine facing the road was inaugurated on Sunday 8 September 1957. The chiesetta degli Alpini di Cornisella is dedicated to Maria Regina Pacis, Mary Queen of Peace.

Position

The Alpini of Pasturo believed that on dear Grigna it was necessary to pay tribute to the comrades who disappeared in the war. The alpine environment between fertile meadows and the tombstones inside a small church are two elements that distinguish this small war memorial from the war memorials of the twentieth century. The latter are generally in the center of the country, with a space of separation from what is around, in the form of a real monument. Common elements are the soldiers identified one by one, with the name and a photo, in many there is the date of birth and death that are missing here, without relation to the bodies that are buried elsewhere, the Christian context, which helps to fill the void of death, the accessibility of place and its attendance. Indeed, in the war memorial of the First World War located in the center of the town in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the names of the fallen of the Second War were added.

The church of Cornisella is located along the most popular path of the mountain, not far from the village, the Pasturo - Alpe Cova road, and at the crossroads of numerous paths, where hikers pass. The intersection is now called the intersection of the chapel of the Alpini or of the church of the Alpini. Along the side wall of the little church, where there is a fountain, you reach the locality by following Sentiero Pasturo - Pialeral, which here is about halfway along the route; from Pialeral it continues to the Brioschi Refuge. A road right in front of the church, concreted in the first meters to help cars climb for a very short distance, leads in the direction of Brunino, a place at the same altitude as Cornisella where there are huts and a mountain refuge, which is only a 15 minute walk away. Along that direction in a short time you go down towards the Church of the Sacred Heart of Balisio or to the right you go towards the Valle dei Grassi Lunghi and the Traversata Bassa.

In the Google Map the church is the Regina Pacis chapel,[^] in the map Regional Park of the Northern Grigna[^] next to the chapel symbol is Regina Pacis. In other maps available to me, including the online Openstreetmap, the religious building is not indicated or has no proper name.

The small church

The small church of the Alpini of Cornisella is made of stone, the interior space is small, there is only the altar, closed by a grate, as in a votive chapel. The sloping roof in white masonry protrudes out of the entrance for about two meters, supported by two walls; in the internal one on the left there are two tombstones with the names of Pasturo's fallen in the second war. The floor of the structure still advances by one meter, on an outermost corner stone there is the inscription year 2014. The entrance faces the street, in a southerly direction.[^][^]

The facade of the church is finished with frescoes. Above the door, on two lines there is the inscription Regina Pacis Ora Pro Nobis, surrounded in a semicircle by the design of a laurel. In front of the church left a drawing of Mary standing, then the wrought iron door in circles with a central cross. Above the door the inscription in two lines Regina Pacis Ora Pro Nobis and under the written a drawing of a bay, to the right a mountain with the signature of the painter P. Motta 1957. Pierino Motta of Introbio is the author of numerous frescoes in the churches of Valsassina, active between the end of the 1930s and the 1960s. The door is in black wrought iron, with empty circles with a cross in the center, on the side two boxes for offerings. On the sides of the entrance and under the tombstones there are vases of fresh flowers. Above the sloping roof, a cross and a bell tower, in the background the mountains of the Piani di Bobbio. Along the side wall facing downstream, near an artificial spring and along the path to Pasturo, at the top there is the inscription Chiesetta degli Alpini A.D. 1957.[^][^] The design of the church is by the architect Delino Manzoni.

In the left side wall of the covered facade there are the two gray marble tombstones that generated the religious building. One is entitled A perennial memory of the fallen and missing in the 1940-45 war, the other The "Penne Nere" of Pasturo conceived and built this small alpine church. The list of names is in the next paragraph.

Looking inside the empty door of the small church of the Alpini Regina Pacis, in front of the altar there is the helmet of an Alpine with a candle on it supported by a wrought iron structure. On the left, still four black marble tombstones, and a fifth in the central wall, copies of the external ones so that the names of Alpine troops who subsequently died would be next to those who fell in war, as a sign of solidarity and communion. In the center, behind a table that acts as an altar, a five-line plaque: This alpine church was inaugurated and blessed on 8 September 1957 by H.E. Mons. Arrigo Pintonello Military Ordinary Archbishop of Italy.[^] In the right corner, a faded photo of Pope Wojtyla with an Alpine hat on his head. On the right white wall, under a small window, "Anima sii come la montagna..." ("Soul be like the mountain...") and Antonia Pozzi,[^] the author of the verse of the poem entitled Esempi (Examples).[^]

On particular occasions, such as for the feast of the anniversary of the inauguration of the church, mass is celebrated, inside there is the necessary, the altar and the liturgical objects. The priest officiates in front of the door, while the faithful attend from outside. A few years ago, in the summer season, mass was held on Saturday evening.[^] The position of the votive chapel at the crossroads of paths offers every hiker the opportunity to stop in meditation, pray in memory of the Alpine troops, reflect on the absurdity and consequences of the war in front of Mary Queen of Peace, one of the intentions of who wanted and who designed this alpine church.

The names of the fallen

On the left side wall of the chapel of the Alpini in Cornisella, outside the entrance, two gray marble plaques placed side by side commemorate the Alpine troops of Pasturo who fell in the Second World War, listed with their name and the place of death in the next smaller line, Deceduto or Disperso (Deceased or Missing), and alongside a photo.[^]

The inauguration

It must have been a day of great emotion and heartfelt participation for all the people of Pasturo on Sunday 8 September 1957, when the small church of the Alpine troops in Cornisella was inaugurated. Those were the times when, in addition to rebuilding Italy, it was thought of giving a place of memory for those who had lost their lives in war; in Pasturo of the three options, Rocca di Baiedo, Cornisella, Strada dei Castagneti, it won the locality in the direction of Alpe Cova and Pialeral. Some of those present had actually fought alongside comrades who had not returned or to war, there were family and friends.

On a splendid sunny day, an illustrious man of the clergy was present at the consecration, the military archbishop, Monsignor Arrigo Pintonello, while the parish priest of Pasturo was Don Tullio Vitali, not yet thirty years old. Representing the government was the Undersecretary of Defense, Honorable Virginio Bertinelli, for the Alpine troops the president of the ANA section of Lecco, Ugo Merlini, who years later, in 1965, would become national president of black feathers. The official speech was given by the lawyer Roberto Pozzi, father of the poet Antonia, former first citizen of Pasturo.[^] A plaque in the central wall of the church commemorates the 8 September 1957.
The chiesetta degli Alpini di Cornisella was born two years earlier than the votive temple in Pian delle Betulle, commissioned by the survivors of the Morbegno battalion after a vote made on the Greek-Albanian front in the war years 1941-1942, which will become the reference place of the celebrations of the second war for Valsassina.

The feast in Cornisella every second Sunday in September

Every second Sunday of September Pasturo gathers on the occasion of the anniversary of the inauguration of the alpine church of Cornisella wanted by the Penne Nere to pay homage to the fallen in the second war. It is a testimony of affection for loved ones and of Christian faith, which is present in the country as in the entire valley.

On Sunday 11 September 2016 I was there too, along with hundreds of people, perhaps a thousand, at the alpine chapel of Cornisella by architect Delino Manzoni consecrated in 1957. The commemoration was assisted by the beautiful weather, sunshine and summer temperatures. Many have climbed from the village on foot to about a thousand meters above sea level in the town on the Grignone, who could not by car. The ceremonial and the sincere participation of the people, of the place and some vacationers, of the Alpini, with their unmistakable headgear and green t-shirt, and of those holding a public office have honored the Alpine soldiers who fell in war.

A quarter of an hour before noon, the flag raising of the tricolor, to the notes of the hymn by Mameli played by the Pasturo band.[^] It is one of the best videos I have shot, I was in an optimal position, on the raised lawn in front of the church, next to the trail signs. Then silence, meditation as a sign of respect for the deposition of the laurel wreath by a group of Alpine troops on the internal wall of the chapel where there are two tombstones with the names of the fallen and missing in the Second World War.[^] At midday mass began, celebrated by Don Antonio Fazzini, the pastor of Pasturo, with the altar in front of the entrance to the little church of the Alpini Maria Regina Pacis. The priest was surrounded by two lines of Alpini between Italian flags and local groups of the National Alpini Association,[^] outside around the crossroads of the Alpini the people. After the Eucharistic celebration, those present moved from the votive chapel of Cornisella to the rough walled hut along the road, about fifty meters further down, where the refreshment was set up. At the checkout you took the lunch ticket. At a modest price you could eat polenta, salamelle, a slice of cake, drink water and red wine and continue the party going together.[^]

Cornisella

Italiano

Cornisella is a few hectares of land at about 1050 meters above sea level on the Grignone, in a panoramic and central position on the Pasturo side in Valsassina, along the agro-forestry-pastoral road Pasturo - Alpe Cova and crossing of numerous paths, reachable from the village on foot without difficulty in about three quarters of an hour. The locality consists of a sloping meadow, which also serves as a cow pasture, a handful of huts, a small church of the Alpine. The Cornisella stream flows into the Valle dell'Acqua Fredda (Cold Water Valley), about ten meters deep from the level of the road, one of the main hydrographic axes of the mountain, which here changes direction going south. It should be noted that a power line crosses the meadows in the lower part of the locality, with high voltage wires between two pylons located at the end of Cornisella.

Cornisella is located halfway along one of the main paths of the Northern Grigna, Sentiero Pasturo - Pialeral, which from Pialeral continues to the top of the mountain with the Brioschi Refuge. In Cornisella, the path follows the Pasturo - Alpe Cova road, as does the Pedalando nel Parco 2 itinerary, a long marked route for bikes that comes from the Valle dei Grassi Lunghi and Traversata Bassa crossing the Valle dell'Acqua Fredda.
On the opposite side of this valley, there are numerous trails, which have a partly common route. There is Sentiero Cornisella - Brunino one branch goes to the small chapel of the locality and coincides with Itinerario Pedalando nel Parco 3, the other, which I describe in the opposite direction in Sentiero Brunino - Cornisella, remains along the edge of the valley to emerge a few meters below Agriturismo Brunino. Brunino is a quarter of an hour on foot with no difference in height. The first part of the Sentiero Cornisella - Brunino is common to the Sentiero Colle di Balisio - Cornisella, which is named in the opposite direction. Ultimately, from Cornisella you go everywhere in Grigna.[^][^][^][^]

Precisely where in 1957 the small church was built in memory of the Alpine, the roads and paths wind, indicated with vertical signs. At the Cornisella crossing or Alpine crossing there are two houses and a fountain. Perpendicular to the Pasturo - Alpe Cova road, a road on the right descends steeply and on the opposite side another is concreted for the few meters of the climb before continuing on flat ground; on top of a hill stands a hut in a dominant position.[^][^][^]

Church of the Alpini

The chiesetta degli Alpini (church of the Alpini) is now the main reference point of Cornisella, located in what can be considered the center of the locality, along the Pasturo - Alpe Cova road and at the fork in the paths; the entrance faces the street. The church is a votive chapel built on the will of the Pasturo Alpine Group of the ANA (National Alpine Association), who chose this place above the village to remember the Pasturo Alpine soldiers who fell in the Second World War. their names are in two marble plaques on a side wall of the building, with a photo; one is entitled A perennial memory of the fallen and missing in the 1940-45 war, the other The "Penne Nere" of Pasturo conceived and built this small alpine church.

The church of Cornisella was built on a project by the architect Delino Manzoni and dedicated to Maria Regina Pacis. On the façade, the Madonna is drawn standing holding black pens, above the door surrounded by laurel the inscription Regina Pacis Ora Pro Nobis, to the right a steep rocky mountain, frescoes by Pierino Motta.[^] The chapel was inaugurated and consecrated on Sunday 8 September 1957, in the presence of Monsignor Arrigo Pintonello, a plaque inside commemorates that day. On the right wall a verse from a poem by Antonia Pozzi, who spent her holidays in Pasturo in the family villa, "Soul be like the mountain...".
On the 2nd Sunday of September, on the anniversary of the Lord's day in which it was inaugurated, the Alpini of Pasturo celebrate, involving the population of the town and vacationers, gathering for a mass and being together for lunch.[^]

Crossing at the church, fountain and two houses

Under the side wall of the church, where it is written Chiesetta degli Alpini AD 1957, in the direction perpendicular to the road, there is a stone basin with a hose and a button to let out water, essential for hydrating thirsty hikers, many of whom come sweaty from Pasturo. On the side, a wall and a worked trunk, and behind, leaning against the church another trunk with the date 2012, are made to sit and rest for a few minutes, enjoying the view and the silence. Here comes (or begins) the fastest route from the village, with a road that is steeply uphill in the last few meters.

In front of the Alpine chapel dedicated to Mary Queen of Peace, there is a concrete road for the first few metres perpendicular to the Pasturo - Alpe Cova road, and two of the few houses in Cornisella: slightly raised a pink two-storey house on the left and a white one on the right, I saw the owners spend a few days in the beautiful location.

Road that goes down steeply, to Pasturo with three huts

At the Cornisella intersection, near the side wall of the church and the fountain with the stone basin, a road descends steeply with an S-curve, the bottom is in concrete, a pole with horizontal green and white stripes is in the middle, to avoid letting off cars, on the right nailed to a cut trunk there is a Stop Moto sheet metal sign.[^] This is the path to Pasturo, the first part of the Pasturo - Pialeral path, uphill to reach Cornisella it takes 45 minutes, the village is indicated with a wooden sign in front of the church. Immediately, a dirt road branches off that leads to a hut half-hidden by the meadow. The road continues straight and unpaved, along which on the left there is a cabin transformed from a ruin to a luxury home in 2016. I can be so precise on the date because I never fail to climb the Grignone every year. The dirt road becomes a path a hundred meters below, near a large stone farmhouse. This uninhabited artifact, the only one left as it was long ago, really fascinates me, it appears right in my face when I go up to Pasturo.[^]

Signposting at the crossroads of the Alpine

At the intersection of the chapel of the Alpine, or more briefly at the intersection of the Alpine, on both sides of the secondary road, there are two zinc poles with the direction of paths and places; next to the one on the right there is a didactic panel of the Mountain Community. The downstream pole has existed for many years, originally they were two CAI trail signs, used by 'private individuals' to add directions; today we have reached five, the next will touch the ground! This is an example of the non-homogeneous signage found on the mountain because the paths have been managed over time by different bodies, once and for all without revision and with the absence of some reference points. The five signs:

  • old yellow signpost of the C.A.I. with three places: Pialeral Northern Grigna Rifugio Brioschi, the direction is the main road, which the route follows up to Acquafredda. The indicated route is none other than the path 33 Pasturo - Pialeral - Rifugio Brioschi; from Pasturo to Cornisella takes the same time as from Cornisella to Alpe Cova, three quarters of an hour per segment.
  • another table of the Italian Alpine Club with two places: Colle di Balisio Valle dei Grassi Lunghi, along the flat dirt road, to the left of the road that goes up. There are two defects in the old CAI tables, there is no travel time, in this case it is less than half an hour of walking, and the numbering, which was 31A.
  • a wooden arrow: Pasturo, for the road downhill along the fountain. It's crazy that official bodies have omitted the direction for the village downstream, the first part of the Pasturo - Pialeral Path, one of the most popular and important of the entire mountain. Someone saw and intervened, certainly not following the regulations of the signs.
  • a yellow aluminum sign, a strong yellow: in the direction of the internal concrete road, Agriturismo Brunino cell. 339 67 18 395, until recently there was a larger one of the same color with a travel time of 10 minutes... instead of the telephone number. It is evident that this flashy road sign was wanted by the refuge itself.
  • another wooden sign: Agriturismo Oneda 10 minutes, for the main road towards the valley. Added in 2020, the sign is of an advertising nature of its business like the one Agriturismo Brunino.

Next to the church, on an external wall, the horizontal sign 33, the number assigned by the CAI to the Pasturo - Pialeral - Rifugio Brioschi Path, resists, faded by time.

In front of the historic 'CAI' pole, probably installed in 2014, there is the Pedalling in the Park vertical signage, that is pedaling in the Regional Park of the Northern Grigna, which is managed by the Valsassina, Valvarrone, Val d'Esino and Riviera Mountain Community institution; the two logos are at the end of the signposts:

  • locality table: Cornisella 1050 meters
  • signpost table: Risciöl - 2, uphill along Strada Pasturo - Alpe Cova, green label, easy
  • signpost table: Brunino - 3, along the flat road, which coincides with the Cornisella - Brunino path with arrival at the Brunino chapel, blue label, medium difficulty

Curiosity prompts me to look at this latter vertical signage from the opposite side of the information: I discover the manufacturer, Mec.Tir in Tirano.[^]

Next to the sign for bikes, an educational panel Between Geology and Landscape of the Regional Park of the Northern Grigna mounted on a structure that looks like wood has the purpose of informing the hiker who frequents the mountain about Geomorphology: the evolution of the landscape.[^] Along the Pasturo - Pialeral Path there are several of these tables. On the left, on the supporting axis, there is an oval plate of the manufacturer: Ecosol Recycled plastic maintenance-free www.eco-plastica.it, which is based in Montecchio Precalcino, in the province of Vicenza.[^]

Strada Pasturo - Alpe Cova

The Pasturo - Alpe Cova carriage road crosses the locality for about three hundred meters with a variable gradient of approximately 4 to 6%, the bottom is made of concrete. Going up, after passing Felice Invernizzi's farm in Oneda,[^] which is hidden by a curve, on the right a dirt road about ten meters long leads to a hut in the middle of the largest meadow of Cornisella, which is in a northerly direction. Then there is another hut with a large drinking trough, both are in rough stone. The crossing of the Alpine is right next to it, with the church, the signs, the two houses and everything else. From the church, the road is also the path towards the mountain for hikers, helped by the vertical CAI signs and by the historic trail marker 33 on a wall to the right.
Continuing after the church of Cornisella and the flat dirt road, on the right a green bar, then the view opens onto a well-kept lawn and a hut or villa with yellow walls on top of a hill, more beautiful than all the others, the Baita di Cornisella. At the top of the slope, a secondary road leads to this hut and to another hidden by a curve.

Moving away from località Cornisella, the road first becomes flat, skirting the Cornisella stream which is invisible down in the steep valley, then descends to Ponte dell'Acqua Fredda, about two hundred meters in length in all, leaving one on the right where there are signs for hikers.

Road at the crossroads in front of the church

Returning to the crossroads, in this back and forth in Cornisella, we finally enter the cemeneted road between the vertical signs described above and the houses of the intersection. After a few meters, there is a second crossroads, on the left on the flat, on the right down. The signs on the bikes help us to understand something because a signpost in the first line indicates on the left for Brunino - 3 blue circle, in the third line Spinarolo[^] green dot. But how many of those who go to Grigna by bike or on foot know the second place? Halfway up the pole, the ZacUp sign in the same direction was added, indicating a mountain race held once a year. Looking better, from the opposite side below, on a stone wall that divides the road from the pink house, a wooden arrow Chiesetta-Sacro-Cuore Colle-Balisio points in the same direction. I then deduce that on the left you go to Brunino passing through Spinarolo (three huts and a meadow), with an easy bike path up to Spinarolo, and to the Sacred Heart Church.

I follow this road, which turns left and right, drawing almost a circumference from the intersection of the church. The surface is now dirt for the two wheels of a car with a green lawn in between. The view opens onto the Valsassina mountains because the Cornisella meadows are lower, in the opposite direction you look closely at the Northern Grigna, which is fascinating. You come across a house on the right and a stone house in a panoramic position on the left. Continuing, outside Cornisella, past two huts (Spinarolo locality), you go down to a third house, and here a path actually goes downhill to the Sacred Heart Church and then to Colle di Balisio (Sentiero Colle di Balisio - Cornisella, the former 31A of CAI), while one continues along a meadow, where it divides: on the left for the chapel of the Holy Family of Brunino, on the right for the Agriturismo Brunino.

All clear? No, because at the crossroads of the secondary concrete road immediately after the Cornisella intersection there is no indication for those who turn right. The road descends dirt with a certain slope up to the Cornisella stream, where there is a hut. After the small bridge, the road becomes a path, which from experience I can say runs through the Acqua Fredda Valley up to Piazza Spinola and continues through the Grassi Lunghi Valley, until it crosses the Traversata Bassa, part of the route of the old Scaccabarozzi Trophy, which in the opposite direction is the Itinerary Pedalando nel Parco 2. Here the cyclist coming from Itinerary 2 wonders disconcerted about the presence of this vertical sign of Pedalling in the Park Brunino - 3, why he should turn left towards the small church and stay on the 2.

Baita de Cornisela

The house, or villa, or hut on top of Cornisella gives prestige to the locality. The qualities are: visibility from the street, position, isolation, simple mountain architecture, color of the walls, an inconspicuous light yellow, the well-kept lawn without being a garden, panorama. The lawn faces east as the main direction of the mountain, there are some distant plants, of small and medium size and of different families, fruit trees, junipers, roses, combined wisely. Particularly like the solution of the space in front of the house, a grass terrace with birch trees, which descends sideways into the lawn with a few steps;[^] ahead the slope is steeper. The view it enjoys can be imagined by turning your head walking along the Pasturo - Pialeral road, which is lateral to the edge of the lawn, about thirty meters from the house: the Valsassina from south to east, between Zucco di Desio and the mountains of Introbio, with in the middle Barzio, Monte Orscellera, Zuccone Campelli. Its origin could be a renovated farmhouse like there are many on the mountain or it could be born in a more refined way.

Attracted by this building, I have the courage to approach, turning right onto the dirt road at the top of the bump. Known the entrance, and a fresco on the wall, the Madonna della Cintura, dear to the pasturesi for the Sanctuary of the sixteenth century down in the center of the town.[^] Behind, the building is made of stone. Turning the building again, to be clear on the opposite side of the main road, there is a wooden plaque, Baita de Cornisela, the Cornisella hut.

Conclusion

I rewrite from scratch in September 2022 my article Cornisella, which is the first of the blog, published on Saturday 13 June 2015. It means that, thank God, I still practice the activities of years ago, including walking on the Grignone on the Pasturo side. The photos, which were the bread to describe, are in three folders: Sentiero Pasturo - Pialeral, subfolder From Pasturo to Cornisella, which contains the photos taken of the locality along the path from low hut up to the fountain at the church of the Alpine, Cornisella folder, most of them, Sentiero Cornisella - Brunino folder, photos along the dirt road to Spinarolo.

Cornisella was spared from tourism and building speculation which led to the construction of many houses in Valsassina and also on Grignone, especially between the 60s and 80s of the last century, many of which are useless and ugly. We must not let our guard down because greed is always lurking, even today that within a regional park protected by law. The locality still has a fertile meadow in which to graze cattle and collect hay as in past centuries. A few cars and noisy and polluting motocross bikes pass along the road, directed to the huts further up, scattered up to Alpe Cova, in the inhabited area of the Alpe itself and to the Pialeral. Cornisela, to say Cornisella in dialect, so dear to the Pasturesi that more than sixty years ago they made it a place of memory for their fallen in the second war, in a small church, which is doubly unusual if you consider that the fallen are also in the war memorial in the center of the town, added to those of the first.

The church and the fallen of Pasturo are a valid reason why Cornisella bella is the destination of arrival, for a mass or a form of greeting. Not for hikers, who instead are headed higher, Alpe Cova, Pialeral, Church of San Calimero, or the more trained at the top of Grigna and Rifugio Brioschi. That's the way it is for me too; however, sometimes I am satisfied with the flat Brunino ring-route, or at most the place is the point of arrival to take some pictures. I appreciate the fresh air when you go above a thousand meters of altitude, which is even drier. I am impressed by the large stone hut along the Pasturo path, the meadows and the drinking fountain. At the crossroads of the Alpini, I observe the hikers who sit on the trunks along the church, I pause perplexed on the heterogeneous indications at the intersection, I contemplate the facade of the church of the Alpini, with photos of the fallen, the fresco of Mary, who intercedes for us in prayer, the cross on the roof and the little bell, before continuing on my way.
